PROJECTS

As part of our strategy to bring about change in Zimbabwe, we are actively working within the community, understanding their issues and providing basic needs, such as bread, maize and soap.

It is crucial that the children of tomorrow have a chance of contributing to rebuilding the crumbling economy. As such, ROHR is aiding children with their education by providing school fees, teachers salaries, books and pencils.

One of our projects is to help the people of Hatcliff Extension, which is a vast township on the outskirts of the capital city, Harare. It is one of the worst areas affected by the government created human rights crisis in Zimbabwe. Most of the inhabitants have settled there as a result of Mugabe's "operation clean up filth" in 2005, where over 700,000 people's homes and livelihoods were destroyed. It is township with over 20 000 people living in appalling conditions, in shacks cobbled together from pieces of scrap and waste materials. There is no running water, sewage or electricity. Disease is rife with dihorea and cholera reaching epic proportions.

On the 6th of October, we gathered around 7000 inhabitants, including over 2000 children, in a peaceful demonstration against the human rights abuses they are suffering. It is becoming more evident that the people of Zimbabwe have had enough of the regime and are standing together in their thousands.

The major concern the "chief" Sam Zulu has, is for the children of Hatcliff Extension and their education. Thousands of children walk for miles every day, without food to attend school. The "school" is a field of dust, with no shelter, water or toilets. Despite these terrible conditions, the children's willingness to learn is unprecidented.

ROHR has donated over 500 note books, text books and pencils. We are also raising funds to sink 10 boreholes.
